Tell us a little about yourself and what you do at OnPoint!
I’m Vicki Gilbert, I am an auditor for OnPoint. I live in North East, Maryland. It’s a small town in the northeast corner of the state. My husband recently retired from the Army, and we decided to put down roots here. We are centrally located between where our kids (grown adults now) live. We have 7 grandkids, ages 3-10. I love spending as much time with them as possible.
How did you find your way into healthcare, specifically coding and auditing?
I began my healthcare career as a receptionist at a Medicaid wellness center. Then later I moved to a job doing data entry for emergency room charges/claims and working denials.
Was there a moment when you knew this career path was the right fit for you?
There wasn’t a specific moment when I knew this was going to be my career path. It just seemed to grow over time. The more I learned the more I wanted to know. This led to obtaining my COC, CPC, and CPMA. I’m still undecided about getting another certification.
What’s a skill you use every day that you couldn’t do your job without?
The ability to research. I like to dig to find answers. I like knowing what the rules are, guidelines, policies, etc.
Tell us about a proud moment in your career (or life!)
Being named employee of the year while working my first coding job after becoming a certified coder.
What do you like about working for OnPoint?
I like that OnPoint is a team. I feel supported by everyone I work with and challenged by the opportunities I’ve been given.
What are some of your favorite resources (book, guide, podcast) to help you stay up to date in your profession?
I like AAPC webinars and Codify articles. I like Paint the Medical Picture Podcast.
What are you looking forward to most this year? (Could be a trip you have planned, an event you’re eagerly anticipating, or anything else that gets you excited!)
I’m currently looking forward to a trip to upstate New York this spring to spend some time with 4 of my grandsons. And hopefully to see some old friends.
Favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
Spending time with family and friends.
What are you currently watching or reading?
I like anything crime related, Forensic Files, Dateline, NCIS, FBI, Homicide Hunter. I like reading biographies and autobiographies. I’ve always been interested in other people’s stories.
What’s something about you that not many people may know?
I collect turtles (figurines, artwork, etc.). I currently have about 200 different pieces in my collection. There are turtles in every room of my home.
