How did you first get started in healthcare? I started as an IP coder in 1993 after graduating from Temple University’s HIM program and obtaining my RRA…yes I am that old!

Tell us about a proud moment in your career (or life!): I am a proud Dad of two great kids, Natalie 26 and Nathan 21.

What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job? LOL…what coding is! I think most people (including my Daughter) think I work on computer programming. Outside of the field and hospital revenue departments, it is a mystery to most folks.

What do you love most about your job? I love the fact that every single case is unique and the knowledge base required to do the job is ALWAYS expanding as medicine advances.

What’s something you find challenging in your line of work? It is a challenge to stay on top of all the new meds, technology and advances in healthcare. Challenging but fun.

How has DRG auditing evolved since you first started in the field? Well, I don’t have to read physician “handwriting” (I use the term very loosely) and lug around 3 volumes of coding books anymore.

What’s one item you always keep on your desk? There is no room left on my desk, but I like to keep “fun” stuff around my work area. Like my Pirates, Patriots and Temple stuff. Some Napoleon Dynamite and Jack Skellington toys. Pics of the family and other randomness that I have collected over the years.

What’s your favorite way to spend your day off? Hiking/Foraging or heading to a flea market/thrifting.

Favorite hobby? Hiking and foraging.

Do you have any kids or pets? Tell us about them! Two kids, Natalie 26 and Nate 21. Natalie lives in Philly after getting her Masters from Temple U. Nate is still at home, but sadly is planning a move to Maine in the next couple years.

What’s the next place on your travel bucket list? I would like to visit The Stanley Hotel in Colorado (if you are a Stephen King fan…you will know why 😉)

What is something you’ve always wanted to learn? Guitar

What’s one song you have completely memorized? I have a load of them up there. For some reason, song lyrics really stick in my brain.

What’s something about you that not many people know? I love cooking.

What are you currently watching or reading? The Bear, The Chi, rewatching Breaking Bad. Waiting on new Ted Lasso, The Testaments, Rooster and probably 10 other shows!

Coffee, tea, or energy drinks? Coffee, is there something else?
