What led you to become a Compliance Auditor and Educator?

“After years of working in the hospital, I was ready for a change of pace that still allowed me the space to use my medical background. A friend that owned a consulting company for medical coding, shared the details of the profession with me and the rest is history. I signed up for the program the next day.

What’s one thing you love about your job?

“I love the education sessions! When I started this career, I was given the opportunity to be part of an apprenticeship program. I was given valuable time with an auditor to develop the skills within the workforce. It truly shaped me into the auditor I am today, and I enjoy being able to do the same for my coders.”

What accomplishment are you most proud of in your professional career?

“In 2015, AHIMA announced they were partnering with a consulting company to welcome the first apprentices in the new AHIMA Registered Apprenticeship program for clinical coding. I am proud to say that I was the very first Medical Coder to complete the apprenticeship program and be awarded a certificate of completion.”

What is a common myth about your job or field of expertise?

“That it is an easy, work from home job. This profession requires vast critical thinking skills and the motivation and discipline to constantly be educating yourself.”

What are some of your favorite resources (books, guides, podcasts) to help you stay up-to-date in your profession?

“I prefer watching webinars presented by various educators to keep up-to-date. Hearing the various interpretations is so helpful and they often give me a unique perspective on ways that I can also educate. For books, Faye Brown has always been my favorite. The material is so easy to digest!”

What occupation (other than your own) would you like to try and why?

“I always knew that a career in healthcare was where I wanted to be, but I have always loved interior decorating as well. It promotes creativity and creates a space where people want to gather.”

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

“My family loves to kayak at the river or go boating on the lake!”

Tv show you’re currently watching?

“I am *almost* embarrassed to admit it, but I love watching the Real Housewives franchise.”

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

“There are so many places on my bucket list! One of our passion projects is to build a tiny
house on wheels and travel the coast of Maine.”

What’s your favorite meal?

“Mexican cuisine…my favorite is chicken enchiladas with creamy white cheese sauce.”
